The flower harvest has begun! "Centifolia" roses, or "roses de mai" are the richly fragrant flowers used in perfumes grown for Dior, Chanel and other luxury brands. Nearby Grasse is the center of the perfume industry, and many of the flowers are grown right here, in the Canton de Fayence. This harvest is in the garden of the original home of Catherine Dior, Christian Dior's sister.

The bitter-orange marmelade made by Marie Marcelle Resch, who made over 300 jars of marmalade this season, as well as several dozen fruit cakes. These are simply to give away - to the local policeman, to neighbors, to all sorts of people. She has a hug heart, and boy is her jam the best. In Bagnols-le-Foret, Provence. #marmelade #homesweethome #provencestyle https://catherinekarnowphotoworkshops.com/france-book
The perched hill village of Callian which dates to the 12th century. April weather is very dramatic here, sun and showers, dramatic clouds and sudden spotlights of sun. #provencealpescotedazur #hillvillage #mediaval #heavenonearth
Last Fall, I was allowed to travel to France on a “Love Visa”, an official French document that allows non-married couples to reunite. My boyfriend and I immediately started a book project on this region of Provence, including its many medieval perched hill villages. 12th century Callian, surrounded by terraced olive orchards, was one of the most important boroughs in the region commanding a territory that stretched all the way to the Mediterranean. On the Estérel Coast, I met Yoan and David at a beach bar, closed because of the pandemic. Although people are stressed in this time, they are also more friendly than I have ever known in France. Encounters feel special, and appreciated. #france🇫🇷 #blackandwhite #friendship #cotedazur
Heavenly day scouting one of my favourite places: the Estérel Coast; I love the rich red rocky coastline and turquoise water. It is place to dream. I savor every moment here and now. #esterelcotedazur #cotedazur #heavenly #france🇫🇷 #turquoisewater #dreams
Portrait of an ironworker. Aymar Bragdi was abandoned as an infant, and still suffers this trauma today. His eyes were glassy as we talked about how surely he must channel his sadness into his art. Aymar creates beautifully designed gates and intricately crafted signs, which takes enormous strength, working with burning hot metal. He told me that he feels lucky in his life - in his friendships with successful art collectors and nobles, one of whom offered him and his family a stay in her Cote d'Azur palace. Aymar is also deeply proud of his son, who has inherited the talent and skill of traditional iron-making. You can see their pieces in the chapter on Mons in our book, Un Automne en Pays de Fayence. https://catherinekarnowphotoworkshops.com/france-book
In my happy spot, in the garden of our house in Provence, with only the muffled sounds of the village in the distance and a riot of birdsong this late afternoon. #provencelifestyle #provence #relax #happy #houseandgarden Photo by Gilles Portaz
The lovely Anne-Noël Jubelin of Vivres farm, with a bunch of herbs she kindly gave me. She and husband Hugo Martial Bonnet are introducing traditional-radical ways to farm and grow produce. Croissants and pains au chocolat from the best bakery around - the Boulangerie de Mons. Straight out of the oven they are so scrumptious.https://catherinekarnowphotoworkshops.com/france-book #freshcroissants #pastries #heaven #frenchpastries #painauchocolat #croissants #boulangerie #provence
Gilles and "Cid le Dog." Adorable Cid was actually rescued ... from a dumpster. He is the sweetest, smartest doggie, and we love him to pieces. He belongs to a close friend, but once in a while we get to borrow him. #doglove #sweetdog #gooddoggie #mansbestfriend
I never tire of photographing this lovely village of Seillans - this is more or less the view from our house. #perchedvillagesprovence #provence #hillvillage #prettiestvillages https://catherinekarnowphotoworkshops.com/france-book
I am finding hidden gems in the outtakes for our book, Un Automne en Pays de Fayence. It's always good to look back through your seconds and thirds to see what jumps out. Here's Eliane Agier being kind to kitties in Seillans. I saw Eliane the other day and gave her our book, and I swear she smiled like an angel. I actually think she is one. https://catherinekarnowphotoworkshops.com/france-book
